What is a disciple? Jesus turned one day to the crowds following him and made some startling statements. They thought of themselves as his disciples, but he called them to question their deepest motives. They weren’t opposing him. They weren’t trying to trap him. They were not uninterested in his life and message. In fact, for them it was the opposite. They were his supporters. These were people who were “traveling with the Jesus.” They liked and respected him. They were interested in what he had to say. However, many in the group, as do many people today, mistook their good feelings and interest in Jesus for true discipleship. Jesus challenged those who followed Him to consider what discipleship really is all about. This challenge is just as fitting today.
